Thomas Quasthoff has decided to say farewell to the concert stage, putting an end to his outstanding career as a singer after nearly 40 years: Mr. Quasthoff says: “After almost 40 years, I have decided to retire from concert life. My health no longer allows me to live up to the high standard that I have always set for my art and myself. I owe a lot to this wonderful profession and leave without a trace of bitterness. On the contrary, I am looking forward to the new challenges that will now enter my life. I would like to thank all my fellow musicians and colleagues, with whom I stood together on stage, all the organizers, and my audience for their loyalty.” With Thomas Quasthoff's retirement from the podium, the Schubertiade loses one of its most important lieder singers and would like to thank him for many unforgettable concerts since his debut in 1998. We are happy that he will continue to appear at the Schubertiade, albeit in different roles. Instead of Thomas Quasthoff, Michael Volle will be heard in the chamber concert on August 30, 2012 (8pm), and perform Brahms' song cycle "Die schöne Magelone" with Helmut Deutsch on September 1, 2012 (8pm). In the latter concert, Thomas Quasthoff will appear as the narrator. Tickets already purchased remain valid. Tickets for the lieder recital on September 1 may be exchanged or returned until February 29, 2012. Thomas Quasthoff's master class beginning on September 3, 2012, will take place as scheduled.
