The two horn players summoning members of the audience to their seats add a touch of Bayreuth. But in spite of the deference to the famous Wagner-fest in Germany, where a brass chorale paves the way for performances, Austria's Schubertiade is unique. Unlike Bayreuth and Wagner, the Schubertiade, held in the small village of Schwarzenberg in the western Vorarlberg province, does not showcase the works of just one composer. Moreover, in spite of the festiva's name, Franz Schubert, one of Austria's most famous and prolific musicians, had no link whatsoever with the small village near Lake Constance where the internationally renowned festival is now held. »Schubert hardly ever left Vienna in his short lifetime, apart from occasional trips to Salzburg or Linz, and he'd almost certainly never heard of Schwarzenberg«, says Gerd Nachbauer, the Schubertiade artistic director and guiding light since its inception. Such historical details have not prevented the Schubertiade gaining a reputation as some of the finest chamber music festivals in the world.

In an Austrian village amid majestic Alpine scenery where distant cowbells are usually the only sound, the curtain has gone up on one of the world´s most unusual classic music festivals. Five minutes before the start of each concert, two horn players stand outside the concert hall, built in the mountain chalet style, and play a short duet. This is the signal for those who have been strolling through the green meadows arount the beamed concert hall – constructed entirely of wood from local forests – to take their seats.

Another Alpine connoisseur's delight is found in the far-western Austrian town of Schwarzenberg in the Vorarlberg Alps. This is the remarkable Schubertiade, devoted mostly to that composer. Nearly every famous lieder singer imaginable appears here annually, along with a lot of fine chamber ensembles and solo instrumentalists. The names say it all. If you want a crème de la crème festival, maybe even creamier than Verbier, this is the one.

So you’ve seen everything. You don’t believe in miracles. You’re a music lover and you like to travel. You have visited the highly praised music festivals in Europe and the USA. So you won’t have overlooked the jewel that’s hidden at the foot of the Alps amid mountains of raw and unspoiled beauty, right? But since so few Americans have found their way to the Schubertiade, maybe you too are among those who haven’t discovered it yet.
