50th anniversary of the New Schubert Edition
Anniversary celebrations in Hohenems
Within a few years after the completion of the »Old« Schubert Edition, many Schubert works were newly discovered and gathered together by Otto Erich Deutsch as material for the Gesamtausgabe‹s supplementary volumes. Beginning in the 1950s, preliminary thoughts were given to a New Schubert Edition. This led to the founding of the International Schubert Society on November 19, 1963, Schubert's one-hundred-thirty-fifth birthday.
The Society's sole task is to function as a support association for the publication of Schubert's complete works. The International Schubert Society set up an editorial board headed by Walter Gerstenberg, with Otto Erich Deutsch as its honorary president. It began work on May 1, 1965, with Walther Dürr and Arnold Feil using the premises of the Musicological Institute at Tübingen University, and with Christa Landon based in Vienna. The publication of the new edition was entrusted to the House of Bärenreiter in Kassel.
The anniversary celebrations of the New Schubert Edition coincide with the opening of the 40th Schubertiade season in Hohenems in 2015. On May 1, the members' meeting of the International Schubert Society will be held in Hohenems and (as an exception) be open to guest hearers. On the two following mornings, members of the Editorial Board will discuss theoretical and practical aspects of lied interpretation with Christoph Prégardien and Graham Johnson in the form of a music workshop – an ideal prelude to the Schubertiade's two-year Schubert lieder cycle.

Music research and practice in dialogue (I)
This workshop ponders the question of which elements can't be found in the score of Schubert's lieder but are nevertheless important for their rendition. In the first half of the workshop, short presentations introduce central issues of performance practice, which will then be discussed with Christoph Prégardien (tenor) in terms of their relevance for today's artists.

Music research and practice in dialogue (II)
How important are the different editions of Schubert's lieder for their rendition? In dialogue with pianist Graham Johnson, this question will be discussed by the staff of the New Schubert Edition. After the intermission, the most important aspects will be explained in detail and put into practice with the support of Carolina Ullrich (soprano) and Benjamin Appl (baritone).
